How can architects build a new world of sustainable beauty? By learning from nature. If we could learn to make or do things the way nature does we could affect to 10, 100 or maybe even 1000 savings in resources and energy use! Michael Pawlyn established Exploration in 2007 to focus exclusively on environmentally sustainable projects that take their inspiration from nature. In 2008 Exploration was short-listed for the Young Architect of the Year Award and the internationally renowned Buckminster Fuller Challenge.
Michael Pawlyn describes three habits of nature that could transform architecture and society:
- Radical resource efficiency,
- Closed loops,
- Drawing energy from the sun.
An effort is underway to legalize medical marijuana in Arizona through an initiative aiming for the 2010 ballot.
The measure, expected to hit the streets soon, would allow seriously ill patients to use marijuana with a doctor’s recommendation to treat symptoms such as nausea, loss of appetite, chronic pain and muscle spasms, said Andrew Myers, campaign manager for the Arizona Medical Marijuana Policy Project.
Andrew Myers said: marijuana has proven effective in helping to ease the suffering of people with cancer, AIDS and other conditions.
“If we are going to fight a war on marijuana, let’s at least take the sick and dying off the battlefield,” Myers said.
Ants live in highly structured colonies, and are the ultimate social insects. With almost 20,000 species, ants can be found in virtually any terrestrial ecosystem. Ants have played a crucial role in the evolution of numerous other organisms. Through symbiotic relationships, ants have helped in shaping many of the ecosystems we know today.
This video shows how the ant queens find another place to start a new colony when they are ready to do such a huge step.
